Family traditions probably make you roll your eyes when you hear the phrase.
You may be asking yourself, why do starting family traditions matter?
But the inner child in me is saying listen up because the memories are so worth it.
Hear me out.
The honest truth
Coming from a family that worked tirelessly to provide a great future for their children, I remember as a child, the small moments that made the biggest impact.
In between the long hours at work that my parents tirelessly spent, were traditions and moments that I treasured.
I will never forget my mom coming on that field trip or doing lunch duty. I was so proud that my mom was there and so excited to experience it with her.
I will never forget my dad taking me to the zoo and riding the camels.
It is these precious memories that existed within the pockets of the day that I treasured the most.
Why do family traditions matter?
You see, so often as adults thinking back on our childhood, it is the special small moments that we treasure, not the grandiose gestures, or the big fancy toys or trips.
I remember when first found out I was pregnant with twins, I was so excited to create traditions for my family.
I always envisioned baking cookies together for the holidays. I always envisioned flour everywhere, Christmas music in the background, laughter, and funny aprons.
Life is about these moments. These special moments that we share with those that we love the most.
It is about passing on those recipes, playing board games, watching America’s Funniest Home Videos, laughing, and making smores.
It is not about how big of a house you live in, it is not about the materialistic things we desire, or how much money we make in our career or profession.
Yes, money is important to live and feel secure in our future, but money does not buy happiness.
The one thing you really want right now will be something else a month, a year, 5 years from now.
It is the happiness from the inside that is priceless.
It is sitting around that kitchen and making those memories.
It is hugging each other tight every single day because life is too precious.
It is telling them how incredibly proud you are of them and how much you love them over and over and over again.
These are life’s precious moments.
These are the moments that fill our cups when the world around us is in dissaray.
These are the moments that your children will treasure and remember forever, till it is time for them to create their own traditions, one cookie at a time.
